Why is my Audi juddering or shuddering when pulling away?

This is the most common complaint we hear from S tronic and DSG-equipped Audis. The A3, A4, A5 and Q5 are the models we see most often. The judder happens because the dual-clutch pack and mechatronic unit wear over time, and smooth pull-away goes with it. It is most noticeable in slow-moving traffic, on hills or when reversing. Some owners put up with it for months assuming it is normal. It is not. Left long enough, worn clutch packs cause further internal damage to the mechatronic unit. What does the DSG or S tronic warning light mean on an Audi?

A gearbox warning light on an Audi typically indicates the mechatronic unit, clutch pack or a transmission sensor has detected a fault. The most common causes are mechatronic unit failure, low hydraulic pressure, a worn position sensor, or a clutch pack that has gone beyond its wear limit. In some cases the car will refuse to select gears and go into a safe or limp mode. Do not ignore a gearbox warning light. The S tronic and DSG systems rely on hydraulic pressure and electronics, and running them with a fault will accelerate mechatronic and clutch wear.

Can I drive my Audi with a gearbox fault?

Some faults allow short journeys but most get worse quickly under load. If your Audi has a gearbox warning light, is slipping out of gear on the motorway, is refusing to select drive or reverse, or is making grinding or clunking noises, you should not drive it further than necessary. Is it worth repairing an Audi gearbox or should I replace it?

Mechatronic unit failure is the most common and is responsible for most warning lights and gear selection problems. Clutch pack wear causes the characteristic shudder on pull-away. Solenoid faults lead to jerky or delayed shifts. Oil contamination from a failed seal can damage multiple components at once. On Multitronic CVT models, variator chain wear is the primary cause of slipping and juddering. Early diagnosis on all of these prevents much more expensive consequential damage.
