Tell us what your BMW is doing and we will point you in the right direction. Gearbox repairs, rebuilds and engine faults all covered.
Not sure what the fault is? Describe the symptoms and we will help identify the likely next step.
* Timeframes are estimates based on typical jobs. Actual turnaround depends on the specific fault, parts availability and current workshop capacity. We confirm a firm timeframe when you book.

Service4Service Midlands carries out BMW gearbox repairs and full gearbox reconditioning across Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Leicester and all surrounding Midlands areas. Every job uses manufacturer-approved parts and qualified transmission technicians.
We are an independent BMW gearbox specialist, not a general garage. Gearbox and transmission repair is all we do. ZF 8-speed and ZF 6-speed automatic gearboxes across all BMW models including the 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X1, X3, X5 and X6.
Where a repair is not economical, we supply and fit quality reconditioned BMW gearboxes as an alternative to main dealer replacement pricing. A reconditioned unit is stripped, inspected, rebuilt to specification and tested before fitting. All reconditioned gearboxes supplied and fitted by Service4Service Midlands carry a 12-month guarantee.
We also carry out BMW torque converter replacement and valve body repair alongside gearbox work, and include a gearbox oil and fluid service as standard on all transmission jobs.
We collect and return BMW vehicles for gearbox repair from across the Midlands including Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Solihull, Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Shrewsbury and all surrounding areas. Our free collection and delivery service covers all of it.

We hear this all the time from BMW owners across the Midlands. Someone books in expecting a routine gearbox service, but the real reason they called is because the gearbox is already showing signs of a fault. A harsh jerk between gears in slow-moving traffic. The box hunting or cycling at motorway speeds. A warning light appearing on the iDrive. A whining or clunking noise under acceleration. What they actually need is a gearbox diagnosis and repair, not a routine service.
At Service4Service Midlands, we specialise in BMW gearbox repairs, gearbox rebuilds, ZF 8-speed automatic reconditioning and ZF 6-speed automatic diagnostics across all models. We do not carry out routine BMW servicing. Gearbox and transmission repair is what we do every day.
As part of every BMW gearbox repair or rebuild, we carry out a full transmission fluid and filter service using manufacturer-approved gearbox oils and replacement components. Clean transmission fluid is an essential part of protecting the gearbox and ensuring the repair is completed correctly.
If your BMW gearbox does not feel right, there is usually an underlying fault causing it. Early gearbox diagnostics can often prevent further internal damage and reduce the overall repair cost.
Call our BMW gearbox specialists and describe the symptoms you are experiencing. In many cases we can tell you over the phone whether your BMW is likely to need a gearbox repair, torque converter replacement, transmission rebuild, fluid service or further diagnostic testing before the vehicle even arrives with us.
We carry out all of the above as part of our gearbox repair and diagnostic work. If the fluid change resolves the issue, that is all we charge for. If the diagnostic finds something more serious, you get a fixed quote before we touch anything.
Call 01922 666376As well as gearbox work, Service4Service Midlands handles BMW engine repairs. Engine management lights, timing chain problems, head gasket failures, misfires and turbo faults are all diagnosed and fixed at a fraction of main dealer cost.

Common questions from BMW owners in the Midlands, answered by our technicians.
This is one of the most common complaints we hear from BMW owners with ZF automatic gearboxes. The 3 Series, 5 Series, X3 and X5 are the models we see most often. The jerk or lurch is typically caused by wear in the torque converter lock-up clutch, a faulty solenoid or a valve body that has started to lose hydraulic pressure. It is most noticeable at low speeds, in stop-start traffic, or when the gearbox is selecting between lower gears. Some owners assume it is normal behaviour from a performance gearbox. It is not. Left long enough, the fault usually worsens and causes further internal damage to the valve body or torque converter. A ZF automatic diagnostic will confirm the cause within an hour.
We repair and recondition ZF 8-speed and ZF 6-speed automatics in the Midlands. Most jobs are completed in one to two days*.
A gearbox warning light on a BMW, or a transmission-related message on the iDrive display, typically means the ZF automatic gearbox has detected a fault with the valve body, solenoid pack, torque converter or a transmission sensor. In some cases the car will enter a reduced-function or limp-home mode with limited gear selection. Do not ignore a gearbox warning light. The ZF automatic relies on precise hydraulic pressure and electronic control. Running the gearbox with an active fault will accelerate valve body and torque converter wear, turning a repairable fault into a full rebuild.
We have the BMW-compatible specialist software to read ZF gearbox fault codes and the parts to fix them properly. A diagnostic starts from £30.
It depends on the gearbox type and the specific fault. A ZF 8-speed valve body overhaul and a torque converter replacement are very different jobs in terms of parts and labour. Our prices are up to 60% less than a BMW main dealer for the same quality of work using approved parts. We quote a fixed price before we start. There are no hidden charges and the £30 diagnostic fee comes off your repair bill if you go ahead.
Call 01922 666376 for a ballpark figure on your specific model and fault.
Some faults allow short journeys but most get worse quickly under load. If your BMW has a gearbox warning light, is jerking badly between gears, is refusing to select drive or reverse, or is making grinding or clunking noises under acceleration, you should not drive it further than necessary. Continuing to drive with an active ZF gearbox fault almost always turns a repairable problem into a full rebuild or replacement. We offer vehicle recovery across the Midlands if your car cannot be driven to us.
Repair or reconditioning is almost always cheaper than full replacement. A new or remanufactured ZF unit is expensive regardless of who fits it. The majority of BMW ZF automatic gearbox faults are repairable. Valve body wear, solenoid failure, torque converter shudder and fluid leaks can all be resolved without replacing the whole gearbox. We diagnose first, quote second, and only start work when you approve it. We will only recommend a full replacement if the unit is beyond economic repair. You will not be sold unnecessary work.
No. Under Block Exemption legislation you have the legal right to use any qualified independent specialist without voiding your BMW manufacturer's warranty. The only conditions are that approved parts are used and the technicians are qualified. We meet both requirements on every job. This applies whether your BMW is still under the original warranty or an extended warranty. You do not have to go to a BMW main dealer to keep your warranty intact, and you will almost certainly pay significantly less with us.
The ZF 8-speed and ZF 6-speed automatic units fitted across the BMW range have a number of well-documented fault patterns. Valve body wear is among the most frequent causes of jerky, delayed or refused gear changes. Torque converter shudder, particularly at motorway speeds, is a primary complaint on higher-mileage examples. Solenoid faults cause hunting between gears and erratic shift quality. Oil contamination from a failed seal can accelerate wear across multiple components simultaneously. On ZF 6-speed units, mechatronic solenoid body failures are a common cause of limp-home mode. Early diagnosis on all of these prevents much more expensive consequential damage.
