Chevrolet automatic transmissions give clear early warnings before they fail completely. A Hydra-Matic that hesitates before engaging drive. A 6L80 that bangs into gear under hard acceleration. A torque converter that shudders at a steady cruise. These are not quirks you adapt to. They are faults that worsen with every mile. We identify exactly what is wrong before a single part is touched, and we give you a fixed price to put it right.

Tell us what your Chevrolet is doing and we will tell you what we think is causing it. No obligation, no pressure. Just straight answers from people who work on these transmissions every day.
Unsure what the fault is? Describe what you are experiencing and we will point you in the right direction.
* Turnaround times are estimates based on typical repairs. The actual timeframe depends on the specific fault, parts availability and current workshop load. We confirm a firm completion date when you book in.
GM Hydra-Matic units are robust, but they have known failure points. Here is where we spend most of our time.
A transmission fault is disruptive enough without having to arrange how to get your car to a workshop. We collect from your home or workplace anywhere across the Midlands, carry out the repair, and return your Chevrolet once the work is complete and road tested. No drop-off. No extra charge.

We handle the full scope of Chevrolet Hydra-Matic transmission work across the Midlands, with savings of up to 60% compared to main dealer pricing. Every job is carried out using manufacturer-approved parts under Block Exemption, keeping your warranty fully intact throughout.
GM Hydra-Matic transmissions fitted to Chevrolet models are well-engineered but develop predictable fault patterns as mileage builds. These are the issues that come through our workshop most regularly from Midlands owners:
We use GM-compatible specialist diagnostic equipment to confirm the exact fault before quoting for any repair. Every price is fixed. You approve it before we start, and we do not move the goalposts once work is underway.
Block Exemption legislation gives you the legal right to use any qualified independent specialist without voiding your Chevrolet manufacturer's warranty. We use approved parts and qualified technicians on every job. You get the same standard of repair at a fraction of main dealer labour rates, and your warranty remains completely untouched.
Fixed quote, no obligation. Or request a call back at a time that suits you.
Service4Service Midlands carries out Chevrolet transmission repairs and full reconditioning across Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Leicester and all surrounding Midlands areas. Every job is completed using manufacturer-approved parts by qualified transmission technicians.

It is a conversation we have regularly. A Chevrolet owner contacts us expecting a straightforward fluid change, but as soon as they start describing what the car is doing, it becomes clear the transmission has already developed a fault. A Hydra-Matic 6L80 that bangs into first when pulling off in the morning. An 8L90 that shudders between 45 and 55 mph under light throttle. A Camaro or Silverado that hesitates for a beat before engaging drive after sitting overnight. A clunk when the torque converter locks up on the dual carriageway. These are not symptoms a fluid change will fix on its own, and attempting one without diagnosing the underlying cause risks making the condition worse.
At Service4Service Midlands, we specialise in Chevrolet Hydra-Matic transmission repairs and rebuilds across all models. We do not carry out routine vehicle servicing. Transmission diagnosis and repair is what we do every working day.
Every transmission repair or rebuild we carry out includes a full fluid and filter service using GM-approved transmission fluid. On high-mileage Hydra-Matic units in particular, fresh fluid is not optional. Degraded fluid breaks down the friction material on the torque converter clutch and accelerates wear across the valve body and pressure control solenoids.
If something feels wrong with your Chevrolet transmission, the underlying fault is unlikely to get cheaper to fix over time. A diagnostic now frequently prevents a rebuild later.
Call us and describe what the car is doing. In many cases we can give you a working diagnosis over the phone, covering whether the 6L80 or 8L90 is likely to need a valve body repair, torque converter replacement, solenoid work, a fluid service or a more involved rebuild, before the vehicle even comes in.
All of the above fall within our standard diagnostic and repair work. If a fluid change is all the transmission needs, that is all we bill for. If the diagnostic uncovers something more involved, you receive a fixed written quote before we do anything further.
Call 01922 666376We handle Chevrolet engine repairs alongside our transmission work. Engine management lights, AFM lifter failures, timing chain faults, head gasket issues and misfires on Chevrolet petrol engines are all diagnosed and repaired at a significant saving over main dealer rates.
We cover all Chevrolet petrol engines sold in the UK market including the 2.0 turbocharged four-cylinder, 2.3 turbocharged four-cylinder, 3.6 V6, 6.2 LT1 V8, 6.2 LT4 supercharged V8 and 6.2 LT2 V8 units fitted across the Camaro, Corvette, Silverado, Colorado, Tahoe, Suburban, Equinox and Trailblazer ranges.

Transmission repair is all we do. No general servicing, no tyre fitting. Just gearboxes and transmissions, every day.
We work on the 6L80, 6L90 and 8L90 Hydra-Matic units daily. We know the failure patterns, have GM-compatible diagnostic software, and hold the parts most commonly needed for Chevrolet transmission repairs.
The same approved parts, the same standard of work. Our rates are lower because we do not carry the overheads of a franchised dealership. That saving goes straight to you.
We diagnose the fault, give you a fixed written price, and do not start work until you have approved it. The £30 diagnostic fee is credited against your repair bill if you proceed.
We collect from your home or workplace anywhere across the Midlands and return the car once the repair is complete and road tested. No drop-off needed.
Every job is Block Exemption compliant. Approved parts, qualified technicians, your Chevrolet manufacturer's warranty fully intact from start to finish.
Spread the cost of your repair over 4 months at 0% interest. Ask about it when you get in touch.
The questions Chevrolet owners in the Midlands ask us most, answered honestly by our technicians.
This is one of the most frequently reported complaints we hear from Chevrolet owners with Hydra-Matic 6L80 and 8L90 transmissions. The Camaro, Corvette and Silverado are the models we see most often with this problem. The shudder at a steady cruise, particularly under light throttle, is almost always caused by torque converter lock-up clutch wear or fluid contamination. As the lock-up clutch engages to improve fuel economy at motorway speeds, worn friction material causes a vibration that travels through the driveline and into the cabin. Some owners mistake it for an engine misfire or tyre imbalance. It is neither. Left unaddressed, the friction debris from a worn lock-up clutch circulates through the transmission fluid and begins to damage the valve body and solenoids, significantly raising the eventual repair cost.
We carry out torque converter and Hydra-Matic transmission repairs across the Midlands. Most torque converter jobs are completed within one to two days*.
A Transmission warning light, or a Check Engine light accompanied by a shift quality or transmission-related fault code, typically means the Hydra-Matic system has detected a problem with a pressure control solenoid, the valve body, the torque converter clutch, a speed sensor, or the transmission control module itself. In many cases the transmission will enter a reduced-function mode, limiting available gears and performance to protect itself from further damage. Do not ignore it. GM Hydra-Matic transmissions are electronically controlled with very tight hydraulic tolerances. A solenoid fault that costs a few hundred pounds to rectify can become a full valve body overhaul if it is driven on for weeks with the light on.
We have GM-compatible diagnostic software to pull live data and fault codes from Chevrolet transmissions and the parts to put them right. A diagnostic starts from £30.
It depends entirely on the transmission type and what is wrong with it. A torque converter replacement on a 6L80, a valve body overhaul on an 8L90, and a full transmission rebuild are three very different jobs with very different part and labour costs. What we can tell you is that our prices are up to 60% less than a Chevrolet main dealer for an equivalent standard of work using approved parts. Every quote is fixed before we start. The £30 diagnostic fee is credited against your repair bill if you go ahead.
Call 01922 666376 with your model and the symptoms you are experiencing and we will give you a ballpark straight away.
It depends on the fault, but in most cases the answer is: not for long, and not without risk. If your Chevrolet has a transmission warning light, is refusing to engage drive or reverse, is slipping or flaring between gears, or is making grinding or clunking noises under load, continued driving will make the repair more expensive, not less. Hydra-Matic transmissions circulate a shared fluid supply through the torque converter, valve body and clutch packs. If one component is generating debris, it very quickly finds its way into everything else. We offer vehicle recovery across the Midlands for Chevrolets that cannot be driven safely to us.
In the vast majority of cases, a rebuild or targeted repair is substantially cheaper than fitting a replacement unit, and often produces a better long-term result, because the technician working on your specific unit knows exactly what failed and why. Full replacement only makes sense when the internal damage is so extensive that a rebuild would not be economical. Most Hydra-Matic 6L80, 6L90 and 8L90 faults, including torque converter wear, valve body problems, solenoid failure, pressure control issues and fluid degradation, are all resolvable without replacing the whole assembly. We will tell you clearly if a replacement is the better route. We will not recommend unnecessary work.
No. Block Exemption legislation gives you the legal right to have your vehicle serviced and repaired by any qualified independent workshop without affecting your manufacturer's warranty. The conditions are straightforward: approved parts must be used and the technicians must be properly qualified. We satisfy both on every job we carry out. You are not obliged to use a Chevrolet franchised dealer to maintain your warranty, and independent repair will almost always cost you considerably less for the same quality of outcome.
The Hydra-Matic 6L80 and 6L90 are fitted to a wide range of Chevrolet models and share a number of documented fault patterns. Torque converter shudder at light throttle and motorway speeds is the single most common complaint on both units. Pressure control solenoid failure causes hard shifts, delayed engagement and fault codes. Valve body wear on higher-mileage 6L80 units produces erratic shift quality and can eventually result in lost gears. On the 8L90 fitted to performance Chevrolet models including the Camaro SS, Camaro ZL1 and Corvette, harsh upshifts under hard acceleration and converter shudder at cruise are the most frequently reported problems. Transmission fluid degradation is an underlying factor in most of these failures. The 6L80 and 8L90 are both sensitive to fluid condition, and extended service intervals accelerate internal wear significantly. Early diagnosis prevents the most expensive outcomes on all of them.
