Why does my Citroen judder or hesitate when pulling away?

This is the most common fault we see on Citroen models fitted with the EAT8 eight-speed automatic. The C5 Aircross, C4 and Grand C4 Spacetourer are the models we see most frequently. The judder on pull-away in slow traffic is caused by wear within the torque converter lock-up clutch, degraded transmission fluid that has lost its ability to maintain correct hydraulic pressure, or a developing fault within the mechatronic unit or solenoid pack. It is most noticeable when moving off gently in stop-start conditions. Some owners assume it is an engine issue or a characteristic of the gearbox type. It is neither. The EAT8 is particularly sensitive to fluid condition, and degraded fluid is the single most common contributing factor in early judder and hesitation on this unit. Left without attention, the underlying wear accelerates and a manageable repair becomes a full rebuild.
