Jeep automatic transmissions are built to handle demanding conditions, but they develop specific fault patterns that become more pronounced when fluid maintenance is overlooked. A Grand Cherokee with a NAG1 that shudders on the motorway. A Wrangler Torqueflite that bangs into second under hard throttle. A Cherokee that takes an age to find drive after a cold start. Each fault has a cause that is identifiable at diagnostic, and most are repairable without sourcing a replacement unit.

Tell us what your Jeep is doing and we will give you a clear picture of what is most likely behind it. NAG1 and Torqueflite repairs are part of our daily workload across the Midlands.
Not sure which transmission you have? We can identify it from your model and year.
* Turnaround times are estimates based on typical repairs. Actual completion depends on the fault, parts availability and current workshop load. We confirm a firm date when you book in.
Jeep models sold in the UK carry Mercedes-derived NAG1 units and Chrysler Torqueflite transmissions. Each has its own character and its own failure patterns.
A Jeep with a transmission fault is not always straightforward to drive, and finding a specialist who genuinely understands NAG1 and Torqueflite units is harder than it should be. We collect from your home or workplace anywhere across the Midlands, carry out the repair, and return the vehicle once the work is complete and road tested. No drop-off, no charge for collection or delivery.

The NAG1 and the Torqueflite family behave very differently as faults develop. The NAG1 tends to announce its problems through torque converter shudder and conductor plate deterioration. The Torqueflite units signal trouble through slip, flare and pressure-related shift issues. These are the faults that come through our Midlands workshop most regularly:
We use Chrysler and FCA-compatible diagnostic equipment to read fault codes and live transmission data before recommending any repair. The quote you receive covers the specific fault found, is fixed in writing, and work does not begin until you have given the go-ahead.
Block Exemption legislation gives every vehicle owner the legal right to use a qualified independent specialist without voiding their manufacturer's warranty. We use approved parts and qualified technicians on every job. You save significantly on main dealer rates and your Jeep warranty is never at risk.

Jeep owners in the Midlands contact us with two distinct situations. The first group has a fault they can feel but have not yet had diagnosed. A Grand Cherokee NAG1 that shudders noticeably between 55 and 65 mph under light throttle. A Cherokee Torqueflite that slips when the transmission warms up on a long run. A Wrangler that takes far too long to engage drive on a cold start, to the point where the engine has to be revved to prompt it. The second group is proactive and wants a fluid service, often having read that the NAG1 in particular benefits significantly from regular ATF changes despite what the handbook says.
At Service4Service Midlands, we work on Jeep NAG1 and Torqueflite automatic transmissions across all models. We do not carry out general Jeep servicing. Transmission diagnosis and repair is our entire focus.
The NAG1 fluid service point is worth addressing directly. Jeep often specifies the NAG1 as a sealed or lifetime-fill unit. In practice, ATF condition has a direct impact on conductor plate longevity, torque converter lock-up behaviour and solenoid response. A NAG1 fluid service at an appropriate mileage interval is one of the most effective ways to extend the service life of the transmission and prevent the torque converter shudder that is its most common complaint.
On Torqueflite-equipped Jeeps, fresh fluid frequently improves shift quality noticeably before any mechanical repair is considered. If a fault is already present, we diagnose before carrying out any service to ensure the right work is done in the right order.
Call us with your model and a description of what the transmission is doing. In most cases we can point you in the right direction before the Jeep even comes in.
We start every job with a diagnostic before recommending any repair or service. If the fluid change is all that is needed, that is all you pay for. If the diagnostic finds something more involved, you receive a written fixed quote before we proceed.

The questions Jeep owners in the Midlands ask us most, answered directly by our technicians.
Motorway shudder on the Jeep Grand Cherokee is almost always related to the NAG1 five-speed automatic, and specifically to torque converter lock-up clutch wear or deterioration of the conductor plate. The NAG1, which is Mercedes-derived and shared with a number of Chrysler Group vehicles, uses a multi-disc lock-up clutch within the torque converter to improve fuel efficiency at cruise speed. As this clutch wears, it loses the ability to engage smoothly, producing a vibration that is typically felt between 55 and 70 mph at light throttle. The conductor plate, which controls solenoid signals within the transmission, deteriorates on higher-mileage NAG1 units and can compound the shudder by producing inconsistent hydraulic pressure. Both faults are diagnosable and repairable. Left unattended, lock-up clutch debris circulates through the NAG1 fluid and can reach the conductor plate and valve body, progressively widening the scope of the repair.
We repair and recondition Jeep NAG1 transmissions across the Midlands. Most torque converter and conductor plate faults are resolved within one to two days*.
A transmission warning or Check Engine light with transmission-related fault codes on a Jeep typically indicates the NAG1 or Torqueflite has detected an issue with the conductor plate, solenoid block, torque converter clutch circuit, pressure control solenoid, or gear selector position sensor. On both units the transmission may enter a limp mode, restricting available gears to limit further damage under load. Neither should be ignored. On the NAG1, conductor plate faults that produce a warning light at an early stage are substantially less expensive to resolve than the solenoid and valve body damage that develops if the vehicle continues to be used with the fault active. On the Torqueflite units, solenoid block faults behave similarly.
We carry Chrysler and FCA-compatible diagnostic tooling and the parts to address what we find. A diagnostic starts from £30.
It depends on the transmission type and the fault involved. An NAG1 conductor plate replacement, a torque converter repair and a Torqueflite solenoid block overhaul are entirely different jobs in terms of parts and labour. What holds across all of them is that our prices are up to 60% less than a Jeep main dealer for equivalent work using approved parts. Every quote is fixed before we start and the £30 diagnostic fee is credited against your bill if you proceed.
Call 01922 666376 with your model and a description of the symptoms and we will give you a realistic estimate on the spot.
In most situations, continuing to drive accelerates the damage and raises the eventual repair cost. If your Jeep is shuddering under cruise, showing a transmission warning, entering limp mode, slipping or flaring between gears, or refusing to engage drive or reverse, driving it further is inadvisable. On the NAG1 in particular, torque converter debris circulates through the shared ATF supply to reach the conductor plate and valve body. What is a repairable fault at one stage becomes a more complex and expensive rebuild at the next. If your Jeep cannot be driven safely to us, vehicle recovery is available across the Midlands.
Targeted repair or reconditioning is almost always more economical than sourcing and fitting a replacement unit. A replacement NAG1 or Torqueflite does not address the underlying cause unless the torque converter and fluid are also dealt with at the same time. The most common Jeep transmission faults, including torque converter shudder, conductor plate deterioration, solenoid block failure, valve body wear and fluid degradation, are all repairable without replacing the entire assembly. We diagnose first, present a written quote for the specific work required, and only recommend a full replacement when internal damage genuinely makes a rebuild uneconomical. You will receive an honest assessment either way.
No. Block Exemption legislation gives you the legal right to use any qualified independent specialist for repairs without voiding your Jeep manufacturer's warranty. The conditions are that approved parts are used and the technicians are qualified. We satisfy both on every job. You are not obliged to use a Jeep main dealer to maintain your warranty, and independent specialist repair will almost always cost you considerably less for an equivalent standard of outcome.
On the NAG1 five-speed fitted to the Grand Cherokee, Commander and Cherokee V6, torque converter shudder is the dominant complaint. Conductor plate deterioration causing fault codes, erratic gear selection and transmission warnings is the second most frequent issue. ATF degradation accelerates both of these significantly. Extended service intervals are a primary contributing factor in early NAG1 failure across the Grand Cherokee range. On the Torqueflite 62TE fitted to the Cherokee and Renegade, clutch pack slip and solenoid block deterioration are the most common complaints. On the 65RFE fitted to the Wrangler and larger Grand Cherokee variants, harsh shifts under heavy load and torque converter shudder at cruise are reported regularly. Delayed cold engagement across all Jeep automatic models is typically a fluid condition and solenoid response issue that responds well to a fresh ATF service and targeted solenoid repair.
