It is one of the most common calls we receive from Land Rover owners across the Midlands. Someone rings looking for a routine automatic gearbox service, but the reason they rang is usually because the gearbox is already doing something it should not. A ZF 8HP shuddering on the motorway. A Discovery that judders when pulling away from rest. A Range Rover Sport that hunts between gears or feels rough through the lower ratios. A Freelander 2 that hesitates before selecting drive. What they actually need is a gearbox diagnosis and a targeted repair, not a routine fluid change on its own.
At Service4Service Midlands, we specialise in Land Rover automatic gearbox repairs, rebuilds and diagnostics across all models and all gearbox types in the current Land Rover range. We do not carry out routine Land Rover servicing. Gearbox and transmission repair is what we do every day.
As part of every automatic gearbox repair or rebuild on a Land Rover, we carry out a full transmission fluid and filter service using the correct fluid specification for the unit fitted. Fluid condition is particularly important on the ZF 8HP, where degraded oil is a known contributor to torque converter shudder and harsh cold-start shifting behaviour.
If your Land Rover automatic does not feel right, there is almost always an underlying fault behind it. Catching it early with a gearbox diagnostic usually prevents additional internal damage and keeps the overall repair cost lower.
Call our Land Rover gearbox specialists and describe what the vehicle is doing. In many cases we can tell you over the phone whether the fault points to a ZF 8HP torque converter issue, a valve body or solenoid problem, a fluid service requirement, or whether a full diagnostic is needed before the vehicle arrives with us.
We carry out all of the above as part of our automatic gearbox repair and diagnostic work. If a fluid service resolves the issue, that is all we charge for. If the diagnostic uncovers something more serious, you receive a fixed quote before we start any repair work.
Call 01922 666376Alongside automatic gearbox work, Service4Service Midlands handles Land Rover engine repairs. Engine management lights, timing chain wear, turbocharger faults, EGR and DPF issues, head gasket failures and oil consumption problems are all diagnosed and resolved at a fraction of main dealer cost.
We cover all Land Rover petrol and diesel engines including the Ingenium 2.0 petrol and diesel four-cylinder, the 3.0 SDV6 and TDV6 diesel, the 4.4 SDV8 diesel, the 3.0 P300 and P400 petrol six-cylinder, the 5.0 supercharged V8, and all engine variants fitted across the Freelander 2, Discovery Sport, Discovery, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover and Defender ranges.

Gearbox repair is all we do. Here is what that means for you.

Common questions from Land Rover owners in the Midlands, answered by our technicians.
Torque converter shudder at higher road speeds is one of the most frequent complaints we receive from Land Rover owners, particularly those running the ZF 8HP automatic fitted to the current Defender, Discovery, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The shudder typically appears between 50 and 70 mph when the torque converter lock-up clutch is engaged. It can feel like a vibration through the floor or steering, and is sometimes mistaken for a tyre or propshaft issue. The underlying cause is usually a worn or contaminated torque converter lock-up clutch, degraded transmission fluid, or a valve body fault affecting lock-up timing. On the GM 6-speed units in the Discovery 3 and older Range Rover Sport, the symptom pattern is similar but the mechanical cause often involves solenoid wear or fluid degradation affecting torque converter control.
We diagnose and repair torque converter shudder across all Land Rover automatic gearbox types. In many cases, a fluid service combined with torque converter work resolves the issue without a full gearbox rebuild.
A transmission warning light or fault message on a Land Rover typically means the automatic gearbox control module has detected an abnormal condition. On ZF 8HP-equipped models this may relate to a solenoid fault, valve body pressure irregularity, torque converter clutch slip, or an internal temperature sensor reading outside normal range. On GM 6-speed and Aisin units the causes follow a similar pattern. In some cases the gearbox will enter a reduced-function or limp-home mode, limiting gear selection to protect the transmission. Do not continue driving a Land Rover with an active transmission warning light. The ZF 8HP in particular is sensitive to oil quality and pressure; running it with a solenoid or valve body fault will accelerate internal wear and can turn a repairable fault into a full gearbox replacement.
We carry Land Rover-compatible diagnostic software to read transmission fault codes and the parts to carry out the correct repair. A diagnostic starts from £30.
The cost depends on the gearbox type and the specific fault. A ZF 8HP torque converter replacement and a GM 6-speed valve body repair are quite different jobs in terms of parts and labour time. Our prices are up to 60% less than a Land Rover main dealer for the same quality of work, using the same approved parts. We provide a fixed price before starting. There are no hidden charges and the £30 diagnostic fee is deducted from your repair bill if you go ahead.
Call 01922 666376 for an indication of cost on your specific model, gearbox type and fault description.
Some faults allow limited use but the majority worsen under continued driving. If your Land Rover has an active transmission warning light, is shuddering persistently at speed, is refusing to engage drive or reverse, is slipping badly between gears, or is making grinding or clunking sounds under load, you should not continue driving it. Land Rover automatics, particularly the ZF 8HP, can suffer rapid consequential damage when driven with an active fault. What starts as a solenoid or fluid pressure fault can lead to clutch pack or hydraulic component failure if the gearbox is run on. We offer vehicle recovery across the Midlands if your Land Rover cannot be driven safely to us.
Repair or reconditioning is almost always the more cost-effective route. A new or remanufactured ZF 8HP unit from a Land Rover dealer is expensive regardless of fitting costs. The majority of ZF 8HP faults on Defender, Discovery and Range Rover models are repairable. Torque converter wear, solenoid failure, valve body faults and fluid degradation are all addressed without replacing the complete gearbox unit. We diagnose first, quote second, and only start once you have approved the work. We will recommend a full replacement only if the unit is beyond economic repair. You will not be quoted for work that is not required.
