Saab may have ceased production in 2011 but a loyal ownership community keeps a significant number of 9-3 and 9-5 automatics on the road across the Midlands. The Aisin and GM torque converter units fitted to Saab models are well-supported in the aftermarket and parts availability is not the problem many owners fear. Whether your Saab is slipping, shuddering at speed, refusing to hold drive or carrying a gearbox warning, we can identify the fault and fix it.

Tell us your Saab model, year and what the gearbox is doing. We work on all Saab automatic transmission types and parts are readily available.
Parts availability for Saab automatic gearboxes is better than most owners expect. We source quality components and carry out the repair correctly.

We carry out the full range of Saab automatic gearbox repairs across the Midlands. The Aisin and GM units fitted to the 9-3 and 9-5 are well-documented transmissions with good parts availability in the aftermarket. Every repair uses quality parts and is carried out by qualified technicians.
The Aisin 6-speed in the 9-3 and Aisin 5-speed in the older 9-5 are robust transmissions that develop recognisable fault patterns with age and mileage. The GM 6T40 in the 2010 to 2011 9-5 follows different failure patterns typical of that platform. The faults we see most frequently from Midlands Saab owners include:
We use Saab-compatible specialist diagnostic equipment to read transmission fault codes before recommending any repair. You receive a fixed price for the specific work required, whether that is a fluid service, a valve body repair, a torque converter replacement or a full rebuild.
The Aisin 6-speed fitted to the Saab 9-3 and Aisin 5-speed in the 9-5 are shared units used across a wide range of GM and other manufacturer vehicles. The GM 6T40 is similarly well-supported. Torque converters, valve bodies, solenoid packs, rebuild kits and seals for all three units are available through quality aftermarket suppliers. We source the correct parts and do not turn away Saab work.

Service4Service Midlands carries out Saab automatic gearbox repairs and reconditioning across Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Leicester and all surrounding Midlands areas. We use Saab-compatible diagnostic equipment and quality parts on every job.
We cover the Aisin 6-speed automatic in the Saab 9-3 across all petrol and diesel variants from 2003 to 2011; the Aisin 5-speed automatic in the pre-2010 Saab 9-5; and the GM 6T40 6-speed automatic in the 2010 to 2011 Saab 9-5 on the Epsilon II platform.
Where repair is not cost-effective, we supply and fit quality reconditioned Saab automatic gearboxes as an alternative to sourcing unknown units. Every reconditioned gearbox is stripped, inspected, rebuilt to specification and tested before fitting. All carry a 12-month guarantee.
Torque converter replacement, valve body repair and solenoid work are carried out alongside gearbox repairs. A full transmission fluid and filter service is included as standard on every automatic gearbox job.
We collect and return Saab vehicles for automatic gearbox repair from across the Midlands including Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Solihull, Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Shrewsbury and all surrounding areas. Free collection and delivery on every job.
If your Saab cannot be driven safely, vehicle recovery is available. Call 01922 666376 for a fixed quote or to arrange collection.
Saab owners who contact us about an automatic gearbox service usually have a specific concern. A 9-3 Vector Sport that has developed a shudder on the motorway that feels different from the road noise it has always made. A 9-5 Aero automatic that is a little rough through the lower gears in stop-start traffic and did not used to be. A 9-3 that takes slightly longer than normal to engage drive on a cold morning. These owners are searching for a gearbox service, but what they are describing is a fault that has already started to develop. It needs a diagnostic, not just a fluid change.
At Service4Service Midlands, Saab automatic gearbox repair is part of our regular workload. We do not carry out routine Saab vehicle servicing. Automatic transmission repair is the entirety of what we do in our workshop.
As part of every Saab automatic gearbox repair or rebuild, we include a full transmission fluid and filter service. Fluid condition is central to the health of the Aisin 6-speed and Aisin 5-speed torque converter units fitted to Saab models. Torque converter shudder, solenoid fault codes and delayed engagement on both the 9-3 and older 9-5 are consistently linked to transmission fluid that has been allowed to degrade, and in many cases a fluid service combined with a targeted component repair resolves the fault without requiring a full rebuild.
Call us with your Saab model, year and engine type and a description of what the gearbox is doing. In most cases we can indicate over the phone whether the fault points to a fluid issue, a torque converter fault, a solenoid or valve body problem, or something that warrants a full diagnostic before a repair cost can be confirmed.
All of the above are covered as part of our diagnostic and repair process. If a fluid service resolves the fault, that is all we charge. If the diagnostic finds something more involved, you receive a fixed price before any repair work starts.
Call 01922 666376Engine repairs run alongside our automatic gearbox work across the Midlands. Engine management lights, turbocharger faults on the B207 and Z19DTH engines, timing chain issues, head gasket failures and oil consumption problems are all diagnosed and resolved at a competitive fixed price.
We cover all Saab petrol and diesel engines including the 2.0T B207 turbocharged four-cylinder in the 9-3, the 2.8T V6 in the 9-3 Aero, the 1.9 TiD and TTiD diesel four-cylinder units, and the 2.0T and 2.8T engines in the later 9-5. Parts availability across Saab engine families through quality aftermarket suppliers remains good.

Automatic gearbox repair is our entire focus. Here is what that means for your Saab.
The Aisin 6-speed in the 9-3, Aisin 5-speed in the 9-5 and GM 6T40 in the later 9-5 are all transmissions we work on. We have the diagnostic equipment and the parts access to carry out the repair correctly.
Quality parts and qualified technicians at rates that reflect a specialist workshop rather than a main dealer or premium independent. Price match guarantee on every job.
We diagnose the fault, confirm the price, and only begin work once you have approved it. The £30 diagnostic fee comes off your repair bill when you proceed.
We collect from home or work anywhere in the Midlands and return the car once the repair is complete. No drop-off needed.
Every automatic gearbox repair and reconditioned unit we supply and fit carries a 12-month guarantee, regardless of the age of the vehicle.
Spread the repair cost over 4 months at 0% interest. Ask when you book.
The questions Saab owners across the Midlands most often put to us, answered directly.
Yes, more readily than most Saab owners expect. The Aisin 6-speed fitted to the Saab 9-3 and Aisin 5-speed in the 9-5 are transmissions shared with a large number of GM-platform and other manufacturer vehicles. They are not Saab-exclusive units, and the aftermarket supply for torque converters, valve bodies, solenoid packs, rebuild kits and seals for both units remains well-established. The GM 6T40 in the 2010 to 2011 9-5 is similarly supported. We source quality parts for Saab automatic gearbox repairs without difficulty. Parts availability is not a reason to avoid repairing a Saab automatic, and we do not turn away Saab work on those grounds.
Torque converter lock-up shudder at higher road speeds is the most common Saab 9-3 automatic complaint we handle. The shudder presents as a vibration through the body or seat, typically between 55 and 70 mph, when the torque converter lock-up clutch engages to improve fuel efficiency at steady speed. On the 9-3 Aisin 6-speed it is caused by transmission fluid that has degraded past its service life, removing the friction modifier properties needed for smooth lock-up engagement, or by physical wear of the lock-up clutch surface on higher-mileage units. A transmission fluid and filter service using the correct Aisin-approved specification is the starting point. If the shudder continues after a fresh fluid change, torque converter replacement is the repair required.
We diagnose and repair torque converter shudder on Saab 9-3 automatics across the Midlands. A diagnostic from £30 is the right first step.
That is a question only you can answer based on the overall condition and value of the car, but we can give you the information to make it. The Aisin 6-speed in the 9-3 and Aisin 5-speed in the 9-5 are solid and repairable transmissions. Torque converter faults, solenoid issues, fluid-related slip and valve body wear are all repairable without replacing the complete gearbox. We diagnose first and provide a fixed quote second, so you know the repair cost before committing. If a fault makes the repair genuinely uneconomical relative to the car, we will tell you that plainly. We do not recommend unnecessary work.
A transmission warning on the Saab information display means the automatic gearbox control module has detected a fault it cannot resolve internally. On the 9-3 Aisin 6-speed the most common causes are a solenoid fault, a fluid temperature irregularity, or a torque converter ratio deviation logged at higher speeds. On the 9-5 Aisin 5-speed, solenoid faults and fluid pressure irregularities are the most frequent triggers. In some cases the gearbox enters a reduced function mode. Do not continue driving with an active transmission warning. Running the gearbox with a logged fault accelerates valve body and torque converter wear. A diagnostic from £30 will identify the specific fault code and the correct repair.
The cost depends on which model, which transmission and what the specific fault is. A fluid and filter service is a fundamentally different job from a torque converter replacement or a full gearbox rebuild. We provide a fixed price before starting any work. The £30 diagnostic fee is deducted from the repair bill when you proceed.
Call 01922 666376 with your Saab model, year, engine type and a description of the fault for a cost indication before you commit to anything.
In most cases, no. If the gearbox warning is active on the SID, the transmission is slipping noticeably, it is refusing to hold drive or is making grinding or unusual noises under acceleration, stop driving it beyond what is strictly necessary. Torque converter faults and solenoid issues on Saab automatics worsen with continued use. A fault that might require a targeted repair today can become a full rebuild requirement after weeks of continued driving. Vehicle recovery across the Midlands is available if the car should not be driven safely.
On the Saab 9-3 with the Aisin 6-speed automatic, torque converter lock-up shudder at motorway speed caused by fluid degradation or clutch wear is the fault we see most frequently. Solenoid fault codes on the SID following extended mileage without a fluid change are the second most common pattern. Harsh shift quality developing gradually over time points to fluid friction modifier depletion or valve body wear. On the Saab 9-5 with the Aisin 5-speed, slipping under load and delayed engagement after cold starts are the dominant complaints, typically linked to fluid condition or clutch pack wear. On all Saab automatics, a transmission fluid service at appropriate intervals is the most effective preventative against the majority of the faults we diagnose.
