Subaru automatics are dominated by the Lineartronic CVT across all current models. The Lineartronic uses a steel push chain rather than a belt, giving it a distinct fault profile from most CVTs. Whether your Outback, Forester, XV, Impreza or Legacy is shuddering under acceleration, producing a chain rattle, slipping, showing a CVT warning, or carrying unusual noise under load, we can diagnose and repair it without going to a Subaru dealer.

Tell us your Subaru model, year and what the CVT is doing. Lineartronic CVT and torque converter automatic faults both covered across the Midlands.
Subaru CVTF specification is critical on the Lineartronic. Using the correct fluid is the starting point for most CVT faults we diagnose.
* Timeframes are estimates based on typical jobs. Actual turnaround depends on the specific fault, parts availability and current workshop capacity. We confirm a firm timeframe when you book.
Subaru uses the Lineartronic CVT across almost all current models, with a 6-speed torque converter automatic on older 6-cylinder variants. Find yours below.

Full Subaru Lineartronic CVT and automatic gearbox repairs across the Midlands, at up to 60% less than Subaru main dealer prices. Subaru-compatible diagnostic equipment, manufacturer-approved parts and Block Exemption compliance on every job.
The Subaru Lineartronic differs from most CVTs in using a steel push chain rather than a rubber or steel push belt. This gives it greater torque capacity but its own specific failure characteristics. The Lineartronic is fitted to all current Outback, Forester, XV and Impreza models with the 2.0 and 2.5 flat-four engines. The faults we see most regularly from Midlands Subaru owners include:
We use Subaru-compatible specialist diagnostic equipment to read Lineartronic fault codes and assess chain, pulley and valve body condition before recommending any repair. You receive a fixed price for the specific work required.
Block Exemption legislation entitles you to use any qualified independent specialist for Subaru CVT repairs without affecting your manufacturer's warranty. Approved parts, qualified technicians, full compliance on every job. The saving versus a Subaru dealer on Lineartronic work is typically significant.

The Subaru owners who contact us about a CVT service typically have a clear reason for doing so. An Outback owner who has noticed a faint shudder when accelerating from 40 mph that was not there six months ago. A Forester whose CVT has started to produce a subtle noise under light load on the motorway. An XV owner whose CVT warning light appeared briefly and then cleared itself on a cold morning. An Impreza that seems to rev slightly higher than it used to when accelerating out of a roundabout. All of them search for a Lineartronic service or a Subaru CVT service. In most cases the symptom they are describing is a fault that has already started to develop.
Service4Service Midlands carries out Subaru Lineartronic CVT repair and reconditioning. Routine Subaru vehicle servicing is not something we offer. Automatic and CVT gearbox repair is our entire focus.
As part of every Lineartronic repair or rebuild, we carry out a full CVT fluid drain and refill using Subaru-specified CVTF fluid. The Subaru CVTF specification is particularly important on the Lineartronic because it uses a steel push chain rather than a rubber or steel push belt. The chain runs in the same fluid that lubricates the variator pulleys and the valve body, and the fluid must maintain its friction and lubrication properties across the full operating temperature range. Subaru CVTF is not interchangeable with generic CVT fluid. A significant proportion of the shudder and chain noise faults we see on Lineartronic units are directly traceable to fluid that has been allowed to degrade or to the wrong fluid specification having been used.
Call us with your Subaru model, year and a description of what the CVT is doing. In most cases we can indicate over the phone whether the fault is pointing to a fluid issue, chain wear, a pulley fault or a valve body problem that needs a full diagnostic before a repair cost can be confirmed.
All of the above are covered as part of our diagnostic and repair process. If a fluid service resolves the fault, that is all we charge. If the diagnostic identifies something more involved, you receive a fixed price before any repair work starts.
Call 01922 666376Engine repairs run alongside our Lineartronic CVT work across the Midlands. Engine management lights, head gasket faults on the 2.0 and 2.5 flat-four engines, timing belt issues, turbocharger faults on the Levorg and WRX, and oil consumption problems are all diagnosed and resolved well below main dealer rates.
We cover all Subaru petrol engines including the 2.0 FB and 2.5 FB naturally aspirated flat-four units across the Outback, Forester, XV and Impreza; the 2.0 FA turbocharged flat-four in the Forester XT; the 2.5 EJ turbocharged flat-four in earlier WRX models; and the 3.6 EZ naturally aspirated flat-six in older Outback and Legacy 3.6R models.

The questions Subaru CVT owners across the Midlands ask us most often, answered directly.
Most CVTs use a rubber push belt or a steel push belt to transmit drive between the variator pulleys. The Subaru Lineartronic uses a steel push chain instead. The chain is stronger and handles more torque than a rubber belt, which is why Subaru can fit the Lineartronic to the Outback and Forester rather than being limited to smaller engines. The chain also has a different failure mode. A rubber belt CVT typically fails by belt slip and surface wear. A Lineartronic can develop chain elongation, where the chain stretches over time and loses its precise engagement with the pulleys. This produces a rattle noise at low speed or under light load, and eventually contributes to slip. The chain can also cause issues with the variator pulley faces if it is allowed to operate with incorrect fluid or degraded fluid for extended periods. The correct Subaru CVTF fluid specification is therefore particularly important on the Lineartronic, more so than on a conventional CVT.
Shudder under moderate acceleration is the most common Lineartronic complaint we see from Outback and Forester owners. It typically presents as a vibration felt through the seat or steering wheel when accelerating between 20 and 50 mph, and is often most noticeable when the car is joining a dual carriageway or accelerating uphill. On the Lineartronic the most common cause is CVT fluid that has degraded past its service life, losing the lubrication and friction properties the chain and pulleys rely on at the variator interface. The Subaru CVTF specification is formulated specifically for the Lineartronic's chain-and-pulley architecture, and when it degrades or is substituted with a non-specified fluid, the shudder develops as the chain-to-pulley interface becomes inconsistent under load. A full Subaru CVTF fluid drain and refill is the correct starting point. If chain or pulley wear is confirmed on inspection, those components require replacement alongside the fluid service.
A CVT warning on the Subaru instrument cluster means the Lineartronic control module has detected a fault it cannot resolve automatically. Common causes include a chain tension irregularity, a fluid temperature overheat condition recorded during sustained hard driving, a variator ratio sensor deviation, or a solenoid fault in the valve body. In some cases the Lineartronic will limit available drive power to protect the unit. Do not continue driving with an active CVT warning. The Lineartronic chain is sensitive to operating with a fault logged. Continued use with an active warning accelerates chain and variator pulley wear, turning a repairable fault into a significantly more expensive repair or a full unit replacement. A diagnostic from £30 identifies the specific fault code and the correct repair.
The cost depends on the specific fault. A CVT fluid service is a different job from a chain and pulley replacement or a full Lineartronic rebuild. Our pricing runs at up to 60% less than a Subaru main dealer for the same standard of work using approved parts. Every job gets a fixed price before we start. The £30 diagnostic fee is deducted from your repair bill when you proceed.
Call 01922 666376 with your Subaru model, year and a description of what the CVT is doing for an indicative cost before you commit to anything.
In most cases, no. If the CVT warning is active, the Lineartronic is shuddering noticeably, it is slipping under acceleration, or it is producing a persistent chain rattle, stop driving it beyond what is strictly necessary. The Lineartronic chain is particularly sensitive to continued operation with a logged fault. Chain elongation or pulley wear that is caught early and addressed is a manageable repair. The same fault driven on for weeks or months typically requires a full CVT rebuild or replacement. Vehicle recovery across the Midlands is available if your Subaru should not be driven safely.
Shudder under moderate acceleration caused by CVT fluid degradation is the fault we diagnose most frequently on Subaru Outback, Forester, XV and Impreza Lineartronic models. It is consistently linked to fluid that has been left past its service life or replaced with a non-Subaru-specified CVT fluid at a previous service. Chain rattle at low speed or under light load is the second most common pattern, indicating chain elongation that in most cases is directly linked to fluid condition. CVT slip under load, where engine revs rise without a corresponding increase in road speed, is the third most common pattern and points to chain grip loss on the variator pulleys. On all Subaru Lineartronic models, a fluid drain and refill using Subaru CVTF at the correct interval is the single most effective way to prevent the majority of these faults from developing.
