Toyota's conventional torque converter automatics fitted to the RAV4 non-hybrid, Camry, Hilux, Avensis and Land Cruiser are well-engineered units that develop clear fault patterns when fluid is neglected or components wear. Whether your Toyota automatic is shuddering at cruising speed, slipping under load, showing a transmission warning, or delayed before engaging drive, we can identify the fault and repair it. Note: Toyota hybrid models including the RAV4 Hybrid, Corolla Hybrid, Yaris Hybrid, C-HR Hybrid and Prius use a different e-CVT power-split drivetrain which is outside the scope of conventional automatic gearbox repair.

Tell us your Toyota model, year and whether it is a conventional automatic or hybrid, and what it is doing. We cover all Toyota torque converter automatic faults across the Midlands.
Not sure if your Toyota is a conventional automatic or hybrid? Tell us the model and year and we will confirm it straight away.

Toyota owners with conventional automatic models contact us with a specific and consistent pattern. A RAV4 non-hybrid owner who has noticed a faint shudder on the motorway that was not there six months ago. A Hilux owner whose automatic has started to feel rougher when towing, not dramatically different but noticeably so. An Avensis whose automatic hesitates briefly before pulling away on a cold morning. A Land Cruiser owner whose gearbox has produced a single harsh downshift that was out of character for the vehicle. All of them are looking for a gearbox service. In most cases the symptom they are describing is a fault that has started to develop, not simply a service that has been missed.
Service4Service Midlands carries out Toyota conventional automatic gearbox repair and reconditioning. Routine Toyota vehicle servicing is not something we offer. Automatic gearbox and transmission repair is the entirety of what we do. We do not carry out work on Toyota hybrid e-CVT transmissions, which are power-split drivetrains rather than conventional gearboxes.
As part of every Toyota automatic gearbox repair or rebuild, we carry out a full transmission fluid and filter service using the correct Toyota-specified fluid. Toyota genuine transmission fluid specification is particularly important on the Aisin units fitted to the RAV4 and Hilux. Toyota ATF WS is the specified fluid for the majority of these units, and substituting a generic ATF affects the torque converter lock-up clutch friction characteristics directly. Most of the torque converter shudder faults we see on Toyota conventional automatics are linked to fluid that has either degraded past its service life or been substituted with the wrong specification.
Call us with your Toyota model, year and whether it is a conventional automatic or hybrid. In most cases we can indicate over the phone whether the fault is pointing to a fluid issue, a torque converter problem, or something that warrants a full diagnostic before a repair cost can be confirmed.
All of the above are part of our diagnostic and repair process. If a fluid service resolves the fault, that is all we charge. If the diagnostic identifies something more involved, you receive a fixed price before any repair work starts.
Call 01922 666376Engine repairs run alongside our automatic gearbox work across the Midlands. Engine management lights, timing chain faults on 2.0 and 2.5 petrol engines, turbocharger issues on D-4D diesel engines, EGR faults, head gasket failures and oil consumption problems are all diagnosed and resolved well below main dealer rates.
We cover all Toyota petrol and diesel engines including the 2.0 Dynamic Force petrol in the current RAV4 non-hybrid; the 2.5 Dynamic Force petrol in the Camry; the 2.8 D-4D diesel in the Hilux and Land Cruiser; the 2.0 D-4D diesel in the Avensis; and the 2.0 and 2.4 petrol units in older RAV4 and Avensis models.

Automatic gearbox repair is our entire focus. Here is what that means for your Toyota.

The questions Toyota automatic owners across the Midlands ask us most often, answered directly.
It depends on the variant. The RAV4 is sold in the UK in both conventional automatic and hybrid versions, and they use completely different transmissions. The RAV4 petrol and diesel non-hybrid variants use a conventional Aisin torque converter automatic, currently an 8-speed Direct Shift unit in the current generation. This is the type of automatic gearbox we repair. The RAV4 Hybrid uses Toyota's e-CVT power-split transmission, which uses a pair of motor-generators and a planetary gear set rather than any conventional clutch packs or fluid coupling. The e-CVT is not a conventional gearbox and is not within the scope of our automatic gearbox repair service. If you are unsure which version of the RAV4 you have, check the badge on the tailgate or tell us the engine size. A 2.5 self-charging or plug-in hybrid RAV4 will have the e-CVT. A 2.0 petrol or 2.0 diesel non-hybrid RAV4 will have the conventional Aisin automatic.
Torque converter lock-up shudder at steady motorway speeds is the most common conventional Toyota automatic complaint we see. It presents as a vibration through the seat or body at constant speed, typically between 55 and 70 mph, when the torque converter's lock-up clutch engages. On Toyota Aisin automatics the underlying cause is almost always transmission fluid that has degraded or been replaced with the wrong specification. Toyota specifies ATF WS fluid for the majority of its conventional automatic transmissions, and this fluid has specific friction modifier properties that govern the smoothness of torque converter lock-up engagement. When ATF WS degrades or when it is replaced with a generic ATF, the lock-up clutch engagement becomes inconsistent and produces the shudder. A full fluid and filter service using genuine Toyota ATF WS is the correct starting point. A diagnostic from £30 confirms whether the fluid is the sole cause or whether physical torque converter wear is also a factor.
The cost depends on the specific Toyota model and the fault. A fluid and filter service is a different job from a torque converter replacement or a full rebuild. Our pricing runs at up to 60% less than a Toyota main dealer for the same standard of work using approved parts. Every job gets a fixed price before we start. The £30 diagnostic fee is deducted from your repair bill when you proceed.
Call 01922 666376 with your Toyota model, year, engine type and a description of what the gearbox is doing for an indicative cost before you commit.
It matters significantly. Toyota ATF WS is a full-synthetic fluid with specific friction modifier chemistry formulated for the torque converter lock-up clutch behaviour and valve body solenoid response in Toyota Aisin automatic transmissions. Substituting it with a generic Dexron III or Dexron VI fluid, or with a so-called multi-vehicle ATF, changes the friction coefficient at the torque converter lock-up clutch. The result is either shudder from a clutch that engages too aggressively, or excessive slip from one that does not engage firmly enough. A significant proportion of the torque converter shudder faults we see on Toyota conventional automatics when they arrive at our workshop can be traced directly to the wrong fluid having been used at a previous service. We use genuine Toyota ATF WS specification on every Toyota automatic job.
It depends on the severity, but in most cases continuing to drive makes the fault worse. If the gearbox warning is active, the automatic is slipping noticeably under acceleration, it is producing a harsh or unexpected shift, or the shudder at speed has become pronounced and consistent, stop driving it beyond what is strictly necessary. Toyota conventional automatics are reliable but they do not tolerate extended operation with active solenoid or fluid pressure faults. A fault contained early is consistently cheaper to repair than one that has been driven on for weeks. Vehicle recovery across the Midlands is available if your Toyota should not be driven safely.
No. Block Exemption legislation gives you the right to use any qualified independent specialist for Toyota automatic gearbox repairs without voiding your manufacturer's warranty. Approved parts must be used and the technicians must be qualified. We meet both conditions on every job. This applies within the original Toyota factory warranty period and under extended warranty plans. You are not required to use a Toyota main dealer to maintain your warranty cover. On conventional automatic gearbox work the saving with a specialist is typically substantial.
On conventional automatic Toyota models including the RAV4 non-hybrid, Avensis, Camry and Hilux, torque converter lock-up shudder at motorway speed is the fault we see most frequently. It is almost always linked to fluid condition, either degraded ATF WS or the wrong fluid specification having been used at a previous service. Delayed engagement on cold starts is the second most common pattern across all Toyota conventional automatic models, pointing to fluid that has lost its hydraulic properties or a solenoid fault. Slip under load on the Hilux automatic, particularly under towing conditions, is the dominant complaint from pickup owners and follows the same fluid degradation or clutch pack wear pattern as on the passenger car variants. On all Toyota conventional automatics, using Toyota ATF WS at the correct service interval is the single most effective preventative against the faults we diagnose.
