Volkswagen uses a wider range of DSG dual-clutch and torque converter automatics than any other marque in the VW Group. The DQ200 dry clutch in the Polo and smaller-engine Golf and T-Roc is the most frequently faulting unit. The DQ250 in the Golf GTI and Tiguan, the DQ381 in the Golf R, and the ZF 8HP torque converter in the Touareg all have their own distinct fault patterns. Whether your Volkswagen is jerking in traffic, shifting roughly, showing a DSG warning or in limp mode, we can diagnose and repair it.

Tell us your VW model, engine and what the gearbox is doing. We cover all DSG generations and the Touareg torque converter automatic across the Midlands.
Not sure which DSG your VW has? Give us the model, year and engine size and we will confirm it straight away.
* Timeframes are estimates based on typical jobs. Actual turnaround depends on the specific fault, parts availability and current workshop capacity. We confirm a firm timeframe when you book.
Volkswagen fits more DSG variants than any other VW Group brand. The fault patterns differ significantly between them. Find yours below.
Your Volkswagen is collected from home or work anywhere in the Midlands, repaired, and returned when the job is done. No drop-off to arrange, no collection charge.

Volkswagen fits the widest range of DSG transmissions of any brand in the VW Group. The DQ200 dry clutch fitted to the Polo, standard Golf, T-Cross and T-Roc is the most common fault unit by volume. The DQ250 in the Golf GTI and Tiguan 2.0 TSI is more robust but faults at higher mileages. The DQ381 in the Golf R and DQ500 in the Amarok have their own failure patterns. The faults we see most regularly from Midlands VW owners include:

VW owners contact us about DSG faults more than any other make, and the volume of search queries for Volkswagen DSG repair in the Midlands reflects the scale of DQ200 fitment across the Golf, Polo and T-Roc range. A Golf 1.0 TSI that judders when pulling onto a roundabout. A Polo DSG that produces a jolt in parking manoeuvres. A T-Roc that shifted abruptly when the driver lifted off at 30 mph last week. A Tiguan 2.0 TSI whose DSG has started to feel rougher on longer trips. All of them search for a DSG service. Most of them have a developing fault, not a missed service interval.
Service4Service Midlands handles Volkswagen DSG repair across the DQ200, DQ250, DQ381, DQ500 and ZF 8HP on a daily basis. Routine VW servicing is not something we offer. DSG and automatic transmission repair is the entirety of what we do.
As part of every VW DSG repair or rebuild, we carry out a full fluid and filter service using the VW Group-approved specification for the specific unit fitted. On the DQ200 dry clutch this means the correct mechatronic fluid bath specification. On the DQ250 and DQ381 wet clutch units it means G052 or G055 specification fluid that governs clutch pack engagement, heat dissipation and mechatronic solenoid performance. Substituting non-approved fluid on any of these units damages the clutch pack friction material and the mechatronic solenoid bores over time. We use the correct fluid on every job, every time.
Call us and describe what your VW DSG is doing. In most cases we can give you a clear steer over the phone about whether it is pointing to DQ200 dry clutch wear, a mechatronic solenoid issue, a fluid service requirement or something that needs a full diagnostic before a repair cost can be confirmed.
All of the above are part of our DSG diagnostic and repair process. If a fluid service resolves the fault, that is all we charge. If the diagnostic identifies something more involved, you receive a fixed price before any repair work starts.
Call 01922 666376Engine repairs run alongside our DSG gearbox work across the Midlands. Engine management lights, timing chain faults on the 1.0 TSI three-cylinder, carbon build-up on TSI direct injection engines, oil consumption issues, turbocharger faults and EGR problems on TDI diesel models are all diagnosed and resolved well below main dealer rates.
We cover all VW petrol and diesel engines including the 1.0 TSI three-cylinder across the Polo, Golf and T-Cross; the 1.5 TSI evo four-cylinder across the Golf, T-Roc and Tiguan; the 2.0 TSI in Golf GTI, Golf R, Tiguan and Arteon; and the 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesel units across the full Volkswagen range.

The questions VW DSG owners across the Midlands ask us most often, answered directly.
Low-speed jerk and judder in slow-moving or stop-start traffic is the most common Volkswagen DSG complaint we handle in the Midlands, and it almost always involves the DQ200 dry clutch 7-speed fitted to the Polo, Golf 1.0 and 1.5 TSI, T-Cross, T-Roc 1.5 TSI and Tiguan 1.5 TSI. The DQ200 engages its two dry clutch packs mechanically at low speed without any fluid buffering, so any clutch friction material wear or actuator play produces a direct jerk or grab through the drivetrain. It is most obvious at very low speeds in first and second gear, during parking manoeuvres, or when easing forward in slow traffic. On the Golf it is often first noticed on the morning commute. On the Polo it frequently appears earlier in the vehicle's life than owners expect because the small engine means the clutch packs are working under proportionally higher load at low speed. A diagnostic from £30 identifies the specific fault. Early repair is significantly cheaper than a deferred repair.
No. The Golf GTI uses the DQ250 6-speed wet clutch DSG rather than the DQ200 dry clutch in the standard Golf. The DQ250 is a fundamentally different transmission designed for higher torque loads. It does not exhibit the same low-speed jerk and pull-away hesitation that the DQ200 is known for. DQ250 faults on the Golf GTI are typically wet clutch shudder that develops at higher mileages following DSG fluid degradation, solenoid fault codes, and mechatronic unit issues linked to fluid that has been left past its service life. The Golf R uses the DQ381 7-speed wet clutch, which is a more recent generation and has its own distinct fault profile. Knowing which DSG your Golf has is important before any work is carried out. Tell us your model, year and engine and we will confirm it immediately.
The cost depends on which DSG generation is fitted and what the specific fault is. A DQ200 fluid service is a completely different job from a dry clutch replacement or a mechatronic unit repair. Our pricing runs at up to 60% less than a Volkswagen main dealer for the same standard of work using approved parts. Every job gets a fixed price before we start. The £30 diagnostic fee is deducted from the repair bill when you go ahead.
Call 01922 666376 with your VW model, year, engine size and a description of the fault for a cost indication before you commit to anything.
In most cases, no. If the DSG warning light is active, the gearbox is jerking severely, is refusing to engage gears properly, or has entered a limp mode, stop driving it beyond what is strictly necessary. DQ200 dry clutch faults accelerate rapidly under continued stop-start use. The friction material from worn dry clutch packs generates debris that circulates in the mechatronic unit, causing secondary solenoid damage and turning a clutch replacement into a full rebuild. DQ250 and DQ381 wet clutch faults that involve solenoid pressure issues also worsen progressively under continued driving. Vehicle recovery is available across the Midlands if your VW cannot be driven safely.
The current Touareg uses the ZF 8HP 8-speed torque converter automatic rather than any version of DSG. This is a fundamentally different type of automatic transmission. Where the DSG uses dual clutch packs that engage mechanically, the ZF 8HP uses a fluid coupling torque converter that is far more forgiving at low speeds and does not produce the jerk and judder that the DQ200 is known for. The ZF 8HP faults we see on the Touareg are torque converter lock-up shudder at motorway speed caused by fluid degradation or lock-up clutch wear, harsh shift quality linked to solenoid faults or fluid past its service life, and delayed engagement on cold starts. All are repairable without replacing the complete unit in the majority of cases.
No. Block Exemption legislation gives you the right to use any qualified independent specialist for Volkswagen DSG repairs without voiding your manufacturer's warranty. Approved parts must be used and the technicians must be qualified. We meet both on every job. This applies within the original VW factory warranty period and under extended warranty plans. You are not required to use a Volkswagen main dealer to maintain your warranty cover. The saving on DSG work with a specialist is typically significant, particularly on DQ200 clutch replacement and mechatronic unit repair.
On DQ200-equipped Volkswagen models including the Polo, Golf 1.0 and 1.5 TSI, T-Cross and T-Roc, low-speed jerk and judder caused by dry clutch wear is the fault we diagnose most frequently. It develops gradually and is most noticeable in stop-start driving before becoming apparent in other conditions. Pull-away hesitation and a near-stall sensation from a standstill, particularly in cold conditions, is the second most common pattern, driven by actuator wear or mechatronic solenoid faults. On DQ250-equipped Golf GTI and Tiguan 2.0 TSI models, wet clutch shudder and harsh shift quality at higher mileages linked to DSG fluid degradation are the dominant complaints. On DQ381 Golf R models, similar wet clutch fluid-related patterns apply. On all Volkswagen DSG units, a DSG fluid service at the correct mileage interval remains the single most effective preventive measure against the faults we diagnose daily.
