Volvo automatics are Aisin torque converter units that develop recognisable fault patterns as mileage increases. Whether your XC60, XC90, V90, S90, V60 or older XC70 automatic is shuddering at motorway speed, shifting harshly, showing a gearbox warning, or hesitating before engaging drive, we can diagnose the fault and repair it without going anywhere near a Volvo dealer.

Tell us your Volvo model, year and what the transmission is doing. Geartronic 6-speed and 8-speed faults covered across all current and recent Volvo models.
Torque converter shudder on Volvo automatics is a well-understood fault. Most are resolved without a full gearbox replacement.
* Timeframes are estimates based on typical jobs. Actual turnaround depends on the specific fault, parts availability and current workshop capacity. We confirm a firm timeframe when you book.

Volvo owners who contact us are typically precise about what they have noticed. An XC60 owner who has identified a vibration at 65 mph that was not there before, and has already ruled out the tyres. An XC90 whose Geartronic has started to feel different on long motorway runs. A V90 that produced a single harsh shift when accelerating onto a roundabout last week and has been fine since. A V60 that hesitates noticeably before engaging drive on cold mornings. They are not looking for guesswork. They want to know what the fault is and what it will cost to fix it.
Service4Service Midlands carries out Volvo Geartronic automatic gearbox repair and reconditioning. Routine Volvo vehicle servicing is not what we do. Automatic transmission repair is our entire focus.
As part of every Volvo Geartronic repair or rebuild, we carry out a full transmission fluid and filter service using the correct Aisin-approved specification. Fluid condition is central to torque converter lock-up behaviour on both the 6-speed and 8-speed Geartronic units. The shudder at motorway speed that is the most common Volvo automatic complaint we handle is caused in the majority of cases by fluid that has degraded past its service life, reducing the consistency of torque converter engagement. Getting the fluid right is a fundamental part of returning the transmission to proper operation, not an optional extra.
Call us and describe what your Volvo is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone whether the fault is pointing to a torque converter issue, a solenoid fault, a fluid service requirement or something that needs a full diagnostic before we can confirm a repair cost.
All of the above are part of our diagnostic and repair process. If a fluid service resolves the fault, that is all we charge. If the diagnostic identifies something more involved, you receive a fixed price before any repair work starts.

The questions Volvo owners across the Midlands ask us most often, answered directly.
Torque converter lock-up shudder at higher road speeds is the most common Volvo Geartronic complaint we handle. It presents as a vibration through the seat or body at steady speeds, typically between 55 and 70 mph, when the torque converter's lock-up clutch engages to improve efficiency during constant-speed driving. Many XC60 and XC90 owners initially attribute it to tyres or propshaft vibration, and it is only once those have been ruled out that the transmission source is identified. On the Aisin 8-speed Geartronic the underlying cause is almost always transmission fluid that has degraded past its service life, reducing the consistent friction modifier properties the lock-up clutch relies on for smooth engagement. On higher-mileage units, physical lock-up clutch wear is also a frequent contributor. A full transmission fluid and filter service using the correct Aisin-approved specification is the correct starting point. If the shudder continues after a fresh fluid change, torque converter replacement is the next repair.
We diagnose and repair Geartronic torque converter shudder on Volvo models across the Midlands. A £30 diagnostic is the right first step.
A gearbox or transmission warning on the Volvo instrument cluster means the automatic transmission control module has detected a fault it cannot resolve internally. On the Aisin 8-speed Geartronic the most common triggers are a solenoid fault in the valve body, a fluid temperature irregularity logged during sustained hard driving, or a torque converter ratio deviation at higher speeds. On the Aisin 6-speed in older models, solenoid and fluid pressure faults are the most frequent causes. In some cases the transmission will limit available gears to protect the unit. Do not continue driving with an active transmission warning on a Volvo. Running the Geartronic with a logged fault accelerates torque converter and valve body wear. A diagnostic from £30 identifies the specific code and the correct repair path.
The cost depends on the specific fault and which Geartronic generation is fitted. A fluid and filter service is a different job from a torque converter replacement or a full gearbox rebuild. Our pricing runs at up to 60% less than a Volvo main dealer for the same standard of work using approved parts. Every job gets a fixed price before we start. The £30 diagnostic fee is deducted from your bill when you proceed.
Call 01922 666376 with your Volvo model, year and a description of what the gearbox is doing for a cost indication before you commit to anything.
The current XC60, XC90, V90, S90, V60 and S60 all use the same Aisin 8-speed torque converter automatic marketed by Volvo as Geartronic. It is paired with all Drive-E four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines across the current range, including T4, T5, T6, B4, B5 and B6 petrol variants and D3, D4 and D5 diesel variants. The unit itself is the same across the range. Fault patterns are consistent across models, so the torque converter shudder at motorway speed that an XC60 develops is the same underlying issue as the shudder a V90 or S90 driver might experience. The repair procedure and parts are identical. The pre-2014 range used a 6-speed Aisin with a different fault profile, which we also cover.
It depends on the severity, but in most cases continuing to drive makes the fault worse. If the gearbox warning is active, the transmission is shifting very harshly or erratically, the shudder at speed is pronounced and consistent, or the car is entering a limp mode, stop driving it beyond what is necessary. The Aisin 8-speed Geartronic is sensitive to operating with active solenoid or fluid pressure faults. Continued use with a logged fault accelerates torque converter lock-up clutch wear and valve body damage, turning what might be a relatively contained repair into a significantly more expensive one. Vehicle recovery across the Midlands is available if the car should not be driven.
No. Block Exemption legislation entitles you to use any qualified independent specialist for Volvo Geartronic repairs without voiding your manufacturer's warranty. Approved parts must be used and the technicians must be qualified. We meet both conditions on every job. This applies within the original Volvo factory warranty period and under extended warranty plans. You are not required to use a Volvo main dealer to maintain your warranty cover. On Geartronic work the saving with a specialist is typically meaningful given the labour-intensive nature of torque converter and valve body repairs on the Aisin 8-speed.
Across the current XC60, XC90, V90, S90, V60 and S60 range with the Aisin 8-speed Geartronic, torque converter lock-up shudder at motorway speed caused by fluid degradation or lock-up clutch wear is the fault we diagnose most frequently. It develops gradually and is often first noticeable on longer motorway journeys before becoming apparent in shorter driving. Harsh shift quality developing over time in automatic mode is the second most common pattern, consistently linked to transmission fluid past its service life. On older Volvo models with the Aisin 6-speed, gearbox slip under load, delayed engagement after cold starts and harsh downshifts are the dominant complaints. On all Volvo Geartronic units, a fluid and filter service at the appropriate mileage interval is the most effective way to prevent the majority of faults from developing.
