Specialist diagnosis and repair for Ford Mondeo automatic gearboxes, including the six-speed PowerShift used on multiple TDCi applications, conventional six-speed petrol automatics, the later eight-speed EcoBlue automatic, and the power-split automatic fitted to Mondeo Hybrid.
If your Mondeo shudders, slips, delays before Drive, changes gear harshly or displays a transmission warning, we identify the exact diesel, petrol or hybrid automatic before repair.
Later Mk4 and Mk5 Mondeos used six-speed PowerShift extensively on diesel applications. The 2019 update introduced an eight-speed automatic with EcoBlue diesel, while the Mondeo Hybrid used Ford's power-split automatic transmission.
| Mondeo generation / type | Typical UK versions | Automatic gearbox | What owners often search for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mondeo Mk4, 2007–2014 | 2.0 TDCi / EcoBoost and selected automatic versions | Six-speed PowerShift on relevant models; conventional six-speed automatic on selected petrol engines | Mondeo PowerShift judder, gearbox slipping, mechatronic fault |
| Mondeo Mk5, 2015–2018 | 2.0 TDCi, EcoBoost and Hybrid | 6-speed PowerShift on relevant diesels; conventional automatic on EcoBoost; power-split automatic on Hybrid | Mondeo Powershift repair, Hybrid gearbox warning |
| Mondeo Mk5 facelift, 2019–2022 | 2.0 EcoBlue diesel and Hybrid | 8-speed automatic with relevant EcoBlue engines; power-split automatic on Hybrid | Mondeo 8-speed gearbox fault, Hybrid transmission, delayed Drive |
Widely used on Mondeo diesel automatics. Clutch pack condition, hydraulic/mechatronic control and fluid condition are core diagnostic areas.
Ford introduced an eight-speed conventional automatic with relevant 2.0 EcoBlue engines. Valve body, solenoids and converter control replace the dual-clutch repair route.
Ford's petrol-electric Mondeo Hybrid uses a power-split automatic that blends engine and electric motor operation. Hybrid and transmission control should be assessed together.
A Mondeo shudder can come from PowerShift clutches, converter lock-up, hybrid powertrain behaviour or the driveline, so gearbox identification matters.
Vibration when pulling away or during a shift can involve clutch engagement, torque-converter lock-up, adaptation or hydraulic control depending on the transmission fitted.
A pause after selecting gear can point towards clutch application, hydraulic pressure, mechatronic/valve-body operation or internal wear.
Abrupt gear changes can involve solenoids, adaptation values, clutch wear, pressure regulation or internal mechanical damage.
A transmission warning or restricted gear operation should be scanned with Ford-compatible diagnostics before parts are replaced.
If the revs rise without matching acceleration, clutch slip or loss of hydraulic control should be investigated quickly.
Noise can come from the gearbox, but mounts, driveshafts, wheel bearings, differentials and AWD components can sometimes feel transmission-related.
Describe whether the Mondeo judders from a standstill, shudders while cruising or behaves oddly as the Hybrid powertrain changes mode; those are different diagnostic clues.
| What you notice | How drivers describe it | Possible areas to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Judder pulling away | “It shakes when I move off or reverse.” | Clutch pack, adaptation, mechatronic control, flywheel or mounts |
| Delay then thump | “I select Drive and it pauses before engaging.” | Hydraulic pressure, clutch application, valve body/mechatronic or seals |
| RPM flare | “The revs rise before the next gear catches.” | Clutch slip, pressure loss, converter lock-up or internal wear |
| Harsh downshift | “It bangs as I slow down.” | Adaptation, solenoid/clutch control, mounts or internal wear |
| Whine or hum | “The noise changes with road speed.” | Transmission bearings, differential, driveshaft or wheel bearing |
| Warning / limited gears | “The transmission warning appears and it stops shifting normally.” | Stored TCM DTC, pressure/control fault, clutch data or protection mode |
Mondeo fault-code interpretation depends on PowerShift, conventional automatic or Hybrid power-split transmission. A generic code is only the beginning.
| Fault code | What it broadly relates to | What may need checking |
|---|---|---|
| P0700 | Transmission control system warning request | Read the Ford transmission control module for the underlying gearbox-specific DTCs |
| P0715 | Input / turbine speed sensor circuit | Speed-sensor signal, wiring, control data and internal transmission operation |
| P0722 | Output speed sensor signal fault | Output-speed signal, wiring, sensor data and transmission control |
| P0730 | Incorrect gear ratio | Commanded versus actual ratio, clutch application, hydraulic pressure and internal wear |
| P0741 | Torque-converter clutch performance on applicable conventional automatics | Converter lock-up, valve body, hydraulic pressure and fluid condition |
P0741-style converter faults apply to conventional torque-converter automatics, not the Hybrid power-split transmission or dual-clutch PowerShift in the same way.
Mondeo repair cost depends on whether the fault is PowerShift clutch/mechatronic, eight-speed valve-body/converter or Hybrid transmission related.
| Ford Mondeo gearbox work | Typical guide range | What can change the price? |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic scan and road test | From £30 | PowerShift, 8AT or Hybrid complexity |
| PowerShift clutch / mechatronic repair | Approx. £1,000 - £1,800 | Clutch condition, hydraulic control and flywheel |
| 8-speed valve-body / converter repair | Approx. £800 - £1,700+ | Hydraulic or converter failure |
| Full automatic gearbox reconditioning | Approx. £2.5k - £4.5k+ | Transmission family and internal damage |
| Mondeo Hybrid transmission work | Diagnosis required | Hybrid integration and exact failed component |
We identify the Mondeo generation, engine and exact PowerShift, eight-speed or Hybrid transmission fitted.
Ford-compatible diagnostics are used to read TCM, clutch/converter and Hybrid control data as relevant.
PowerShift clutch/mechatronic, valve-body/converter or Hybrid transmission operation is tested against the symptom.
We recommend the repair indicated by the diagnosis and confirm the price before work begins.
Tell us the Mondeo year, engine and whether it is Hybrid, plus exactly when the gearbox problem occurs.
Service4Service Midlands provides Ford Mondeo gearbox diagnosis and repair for drivers across Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Solihull, Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Northampton and surrounding East and West Midlands areas.
Whether your Mondeo is juddering in Birmingham, shuddering under load in Coventry or showing a Hybrid transmission warning near Leicester, the right repair begins with identifying the transmission family.

Mondeo has used six-speed PowerShift on relevant diesel models, conventional automatics including an eight-speed EcoBlue unit, and a Ford power-split automatic on Hybrid versions.
Clutch wear, hydraulic/mechatronic control, flywheel condition and transmission fluid are common areas to investigate.
Yes. Ford introduced a new eight-speed automatic with relevant 2.0 EcoBlue diesel engines for the 2019 update.
Ford describes the Mondeo Hybrid as using a Ford-developed power-split automatic transmission.
PowerShift clutch/control repair and eight-speed automatic repair are different jobs. Hybrid transmission work also requires its own diagnosis.
If it is slipping, losing gears or entering limp mode, avoid unnecessary driving and arrange diagnosis.
PowerShift, eight-speed automatic or Hybrid power-split — identify the exact Mondeo transmission, then repair the fault the diagnosis proves.
