Specialist automatic gearbox diagnosis and repair for Ford Transit Custom vans, covering the six-speed SelectShift automatic fitted to previous-generation EcoBlue models and the new eight-speed automatic available on the latest 136 PS and 170 PS diesel Transit Custom.
If your Transit Custom delays into Drive, slips under load, bangs between gears, develops a warning or behaves differently once hot, we identify the generation and gearbox before repair.
The first Transit Custom generation gained a six-speed SelectShift automatic with the 2.0 EcoBlue engine from late 2016. The all-new Transit Custom introduces an eight-speed automatic on relevant 136 PS and 170 PS EcoBlue diesels, including versions with intelligent AWD.
| Transit Custom generation / type | Typical UK versions | Automatic gearbox | What owners often search for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transit Custom, 2012–2016 | Early 2.2 TDCi models | Primarily manual; automatic availability limited by market/specification | Transit Custom gearbox fault, van transmission issue |
| Transit Custom EcoBlue, 2017–2023 | 2.0 EcoBlue 130/170 PS and related automatic versions | 6-speed SelectShift automatic | Transit Custom 6-speed auto fault, delayed Drive, harsh shifts |
| All-new Transit Custom, 2024–present diesel | 136 PS and 170 PS EcoBlue automatic versions | 8-speed automatic; intelligent AWD available with automatic | New Transit Custom 8-speed gearbox fault, AWD transmission warning |
| Transit Custom PHEV / E-Transit Custom | Plug-in hybrid and battery-electric variants | Electrified drivetrains; not the same conventional diesel 6/8-speed automatic | Transit Custom PHEV transmission warning, E-Transit drive fault |
Used with relevant EcoBlue diesel Transit Custom models. Valve body, converter lock-up, solenoids and internal clutch wear are core diagnostic areas.
The latest Transit Custom uses a new high-efficiency eight-speed automatic on relevant 136 PS and 170 PS diesels. It can also be combined with intelligent AWD.
Plug-in hybrid and all-electric Transit Custom variants use different electrified drivetrains and should not be diagnosed using diesel six-/eight-speed assumptions.
Transit Custom faults can be workload- and temperature-dependent, and the newest AWD automatic adds driveline components that can imitate gearbox clunks or vibration.
A pause before a loaded van moves can involve hydraulic pressure, clutch application, valve-body operation or converter control.
Banging shifts while loaded or towing can expose pressure-control, valve-body, mount or internal clutch problems.
Engine speed rising without matching road speed can indicate internal clutch slip or hydraulic pressure loss and may worsen rapidly under payload.
Restricted gears or a transmission warning should be scanned promptly, especially on a high-mileage working vehicle.
A problem that appears only after a long journey or heavy work can point towards temperature, hydraulic pressure or clutch/converter issues.
Driveshaft, differential, mount and wheel-bearing faults can be mistaken for gearbox trouble on commercial vehicles.
Tell us whether the Transit Custom is empty or loaded, whether the problem appears hot or cold and whether AWD or towing load changes the symptom.
| What you notice | How drivers describe it | Possible areas to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Delay selecting Drive | “I select D and the van takes a moment to move.” | Hydraulic pressure, valve body, clutch application or seals |
| Hard shift when loaded | “It changes much harder with weight in the van.” | Pressure control, valve body, mounts or internal clutch wear |
| RPM flare on hills | “The revs rise but road speed does not.” | Internal clutch slip, converter/control or hydraulic pressure loss |
| Shudder under light throttle | “It vibrates when the gearbox settles into a higher gear.” | Converter lock-up, valve body, fluid condition or driveline vibration |
| Whine with road speed | “The noise gets louder the faster I drive.” | Transmission bearings, differential, propshaft or wheel bearing |
| Warning after long run | “The transmission warning appears when the van is hot.” | Temperature/pressure control, sensor data, internal wear or protection mode |
Transit Custom codes must be interpreted by generation and drivetrain. Previous six-speed and new eight-speed diesel automatics do not share identical hydraulic/control systems.
| Fault code | What it broadly relates to | What may need checking |
|---|---|---|
| P0700 | Transmission control system warning request | Read the Ford transmission control module for the underlying gearbox-specific DTCs |
| P0715 | Input / turbine speed sensor circuit | Speed-sensor signal, wiring, control data and internal transmission operation |
| P0722 | Output speed sensor signal fault | Output-speed signal, wiring, sensor data and transmission control |
| P0730 | Incorrect gear ratio | Commanded versus actual ratio, clutch application, hydraulic pressure and internal wear |
| P0741 | Torque-converter clutch performance on applicable conventional automatics | Converter lock-up, valve body, hydraulic pressure and fluid condition |
PHEV and E-Transit Custom drivetrains require their own electrified-system diagnosis rather than conventional automatic gearbox assumptions.
Transit Custom repair cost depends on six-speed versus new eight-speed automatic, AWD integration and commercial-use damage.
| Ford Transit Custom gearbox work | Typical guide range | What can change the price? |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic scan and road test | From £30 | Generation, AWD and working conditions |
| Valve-body / solenoid repair | Approx. £900 - £1,700 | Six-/eight-speed automatic and hydraulic wear |
| Converter related repair | Approx. £900 - £1,800 | Converter condition and removal labour |
| 6-speed full repair / reconditioning | Approx. £2.5k - £4k+ | Internal damage and commercial-duty parts |
| New 8-speed / AWD / PHEV work | Diagnosis required | Latest platform, AWD or electrified integration |
We identify Transit Custom generation, engine, diesel/PHEV/EV status, AWD and exact transmission.
Ford-compatible diagnostics are used to read transmission pressure, ratio, converter and powertrain data.
The six-/eight-speed automatic and relevant AWD/driveline components are road-tested against the commercial-use symptom.
We recommend the repair indicated by the diagnosis and confirm the price before work begins.
Tell us the Transit Custom year, engine, whether it is AWD/PHEV and how the van is normally used.
Service4Service Midlands provides Ford Transit Custom gearbox diagnosis and repair for drivers across Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Solihull, Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Northampton and surrounding East and West Midlands areas.
Whether your Transit Custom is delaying into Drive in Birmingham, shifting harshly under load in Coventry or showing an eight-speed warning near Derby, the right repair starts with identifying the generation.

Previous-generation EcoBlue Transit Custom models used a six-speed SelectShift automatic. The all-new diesel Transit Custom offers a new eight-speed automatic on relevant 136 PS and 170 PS engines.
No. It is a newer transmission on a new vehicle platform and should be diagnosed separately.
Yes. Ford offers intelligent all-wheel drive in combination with the automatic gearbox on relevant all-new Transit Custom versions.
Payload can expose valve-body pressure, converter, mount or internal clutch problems that are less obvious when empty.
It depends on six- versus eight-speed automatic and the failed component. New-platform, AWD and electrified versions require vehicle-specific diagnosis.
No. E-Transit Custom uses an electric drive system and should not be treated as a conventional diesel automatic gearbox repair.
