The fourth-generation diesel launched with an eight-speed torque-converter automatic. Converter lock-up, valve-body control and internal clutch wear are key repair areas.
The later 2.2 Smartstream diesel moved to an oil-cooled eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Hydraulic control and wet clutch condition require a different diagnostic route from the earlier 8AT.
Santa Fe faults are especially easy to misdiagnose because two different eight-speed transmission types were used around the fourth-generation facelift, while hybrid models use 6AT.
Vibration during pull-away or a gear change can involve clutch engagement, converter lock-up, adaptation or hydraulic control depending on the transmission fitted.
A pause after selecting gear can point towards clutch application, actuator operation, hydraulic pressure, valve-body/mechatronic control or internal wear.

Santa Fe fault codes must be interpreted by gearbox generation. A converter code on an 8AT is not the same diagnostic path as a wet-DCT clutch or pressure fault.
