Specialist automatic gearbox diagnosis, repair and reconditioning for Range Rover Vogue and Vogue SE vehicles, including the ZF 6HP28 six-speed and ZF 8HP70 / ZF 8HP-family eight-speed transmissions used across L322 and L405 generations.
If your Vogue is shuddering, slipping, banging into gear, delaying before Drive or Reverse, showing a transmission warning or entering limp mode, we identify the exact Range Rover generation and gearbox before recommending repair.

The Vogue name has been used across multiple full-size Range Rover generations. It does not identify one gearbox on its own, so the engine and model year are essential when working out which ZF transmission is fitted.

Used on relevant later L322 petrol and diesel applications. Common diagnostic areas include valve-body wear, solenoids, torque-converter lock-up, pressure regulation and internal clutch wear.
Land Rover documented the 8HP70 with the 4.4 TDV8 in the late L322 Range Rover. Shudder, delayed engagement, valve-body control and internal clutch faults are typical areas to investigate.
The L405 Range Rover launched with eight-speed automatic transmissions across the engine range. Exact 8HP derivatives vary by engine torque and hybrid specification, so VIN identification still matters.
Full-size Range Rover gearbox symptoms need to be assessed alongside the transfer case and 4x4 driveline. The same shudder or clunk can come from converter lock-up, hydraulic control, propshafts or transfer-case operation.
A vibration under light throttle can point to converter lock-up or hydraulic control, but tyres, propshaft and driveline components must also be ruled out.
A pause after selecting gear can involve hydraulic pressure, valve-body wear, adaptation or internal clutch application.
Abrupt changes can be caused by solenoids, valve body, adaptation, pressure regulation or internal wear.
The control module may restrict operation when it sees an implausible speed, pressure or ratio condition. Scan before continuing to drive.
Revs rising between gears can indicate clutch slip or hydraulic pressure loss and can quickly create consequential damage.
On L405 vehicles with twin-speed transfer case, low-speed judder can originate from the transfer case rather than the automatic gearbox.

A Range Rover transmission fault is often described as a shudder, thump, flare or warning message. The exact road speed, temperature and steering condition can help distinguish gearbox and transfer-case faults.
| What you notice | How drivers describe it | Possible areas to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Shudder under light throttle | “It vibrates as the gearbox settles into a high gear.” | Converter lock-up, valve body, fluid condition, propshaft or tyre/wheel issue |
| Hard engagement | “It goes into Drive or Reverse with a bang.” | Hydraulic pressure, valve body, adaptation, mounts or internal clutch application |
| RPM flare between gears | “The revs rise and then the gear catches.” | Clutch slip, pressure control, solenoid/valve body or internal wear |
| Whine / hum with road speed | “The noise gets louder as I drive faster.” | Transmission bearings, transfer case, differential or wheel bearing |
| Judder while turning slowly | “It feels like the 4x4 system is binding.” | Twin-speed transfer case / driveline before assuming gearbox failure |
| Flashing D / warning | “The transmission warning came up and shifting changed.” | TCM fault, speed-sensor plausibility, adaptation, valve block or protection mode |
For some 2017–2018 L405 Range Rovers with 8HP45 or 8HP70 transmissions, JLR documented P0715-64 and P0700-02 with a flashing D / gearbox-fault concern after stop/start. Older five- and six-speed cars will have different code patterns.
| Fault code | What it broadly relates to | What may need checking |
|---|---|---|
| P0715-64 | Input/turbine shaft speed sensor A circuit — signal plausibility failure in JLR guidance | TCM adaptation/software, speed signal and mechatronic valve-block operation |
| P0700-02 | Transmission control system warning / general signal failure | Read the TCM for underlying transmission-specific faults |
| P0730 | Incorrect gear ratio | Commanded/actual ratio, clutch application, hydraulic pressure and internal wear |
| P0741 | Torque-converter clutch performance / stuck off | Lock-up clutch, valve body, pressure control and converter condition |
| P0729 | Gear 6 incorrect ratio on applicable transmissions | Clutch application, ratio monitoring and internal condition |
The same OBD code can lead to a different repair on a 5HP, 6HP or 8HP Range Rover. Generation and gearbox identification are therefore part of the diagnostic process.
A full-size Range Rover can use anything from an older five-speed automatic to a high-torque modern 8HP. Repair cost therefore depends heavily on generation and the extent of damage.
| Range Rover Vogue gearbox work | Typical guide range | What can change the price? |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic scan, road test and initial assessment | From £30 | Generation, code complexity and whether transfer-case checks are required |
| Valve-body / solenoid related repair | Approx. £800 - £1,600 | Transmission family, hydraulic wear, solenoids and coding |
| Older 5-speed / ZF 6-speed repair or reconditioning | Approx. £2k - £4k | Converter, clutches, valve body and internal hard-part condition |
| ZF 8HP full repair / reconditioning | Approx. £3k - £4.5k | Torque rating, internal damage, valve body, converter and labour |
| PHEV / SV transmission repair | Diagnosis required | Hybrid/performance specification and exact failed component |
We establish whether the Vogue is an L322 or L405, identify the engine and confirm the exact ZF 6HP or 8HP transmission fitted.
Land Rover-compatible diagnostic equipment is used to read TCM fault codes, live data and relevant adaptation values.
Shift adaptations, converter/lock-up behaviour, pressure control, valve-body operation and the twin-speed transfer case are checked where relevant.
We recommend the repair indicated by the diagnosis and confirm the price before work begins.
Tell us the Range Rover Vogue year, engine and exactly when the fault occurs. We can identify the transmission family and whether the gearbox or transfer case is the more likely diagnostic route.
Service4Service Midlands provides Range Rover Vogue and Vogue SE automatic gearbox diagnosis and repair for drivers across Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Solihull, Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Northampton and surrounding East and West Midlands areas.
Whether your Vogue is shuddering in Birmingham, delaying before Drive in Coventry, slipping in Wolverhampton or showing a gearbox warning near Leicester, the exact Range Rover and ZF transmission need to be identified first.

Vogue is a Range Rover trim/designation rather than a completely separate engineering model. The exact gearbox depends on the Range Rover generation, engine and model year, so VIN identification is important.
L322 Vogue and Vogue SE vehicles can use ZF six-speed or eight-speed automatics depending on engine and year. L405 Vogue and Vogue SE models use eight-speed automatic transmissions across the range.
On 2011 and 2012 L322 Range Rover models, Land Rover documented the 4.4 TDV8 with the ZF 8HP70 eight-speed automatic. Earlier petrol V8 versions used the ZF 6HP28 six-speed.
A shudder under light throttle can involve torque-converter lock-up, valve-body control or fluid condition, but propshaft, tyre, differential and transfer-case faults can feel similar.
The cost depends on whether the vehicle has a six-speed or eight-speed ZF unit and whether the fault is hydraulic, valve-body, converter or internal mechanical damage. Diagnosis should come before a fixed quotation.
Yes. Binding, judder or clunking during low-speed manoeuvring can come from the transfer case or wider four-wheel-drive system rather than the automatic gearbox itself.
If the vehicle is slipping, losing drive, banging heavily, overheating or staying in limp mode, avoid unnecessary driving and arrange diagnosis or recovery.
ZF 6HP28, ZF 8HP70 or later 8HP application — identify the Vogue generation, engine and transmission first, then repair the fault the diagnosis actually proves.
