7-Speed S tronic
Widely used across Q5 petrol/diesel and later electrified applications. Clutch packs, mechatronic pressure/control and internal wear are core diagnostic areas.

Specialist diagnosis, repair and reconditioning for Audi Q5 automatic gearboxes, including the seven-speed S tronic used widely across 2.0-litre and modern Q5 applications and Tiptronic on selected higher-torque/performance versions.
If your Q5 judders, shudders at motorway speed, delays before Drive, bangs through gears or displays a transmission warning, we diagnose the gearbox and quattro driveline together.
The Q5 has used seven-speed S tronic extensively since its first generation, with selected higher-torque/performance applications using Tiptronic. New-generation Q5 models continue with Audi dual-clutch automatic technology.
| Q5 generation / type | Typical UK versions | Automatic gearbox | What owners often search for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q5 8R, 2008–2016 | 2.0 TDI/TFSI, 3.0 TDI/TFSI, quattro and SQ5 | Seven-speed S tronic on many versions; Tiptronic on selected high-torque/performance applications | Q5 S tronic mechatronic, gearbox judder, Tiptronic shudder |
| Q5 FY, 2017–2024 | 35/40 TDI, 40/45 TFSI, TFSI e and SQ5 | Seven-speed S tronic on many four-cylinder/TFSI e models; Tiptronic on selected high-output versions | Q5 FY S tronic fault, TFSI e gearbox, harsh shifts |
| New Q5, 2024–present | PPC-generation TFSI/TDI MHEV plus and SQ5 | Modern seven-speed S tronic across the new range, matched to MHEV plus and quattro systems | New Audi Q5 gearbox fault, S tronic warning, MHEV transmission |
Widely used across Q5 petrol/diesel and later electrified applications. Clutch packs, mechatronic pressure/control and internal wear are core diagnostic areas.
Selected high-output Q5/SQ5 powertrains use conventional torque-converter automatics, bringing converter lock-up and valve-body faults into the diagnosis.
The latest Q5 integrates modern dual-clutch transmission control with Audi's MHEV plus powertrain and quattro system, so transmission and electrified drive data should be considered together.
Q5 transmission symptoms can overlap with quattro, centre/driveline and flywheel faults, particularly where the complaint is shudder or clunking.
Vibration when pulling away or during a shift can involve clutch engagement, converter lock-up, adaptation or hydraulic control depending on the transmission.
A pause after selecting gear can point towards clutch application, hydraulic pressure, mechatronic/valve-body operation or internal wear.
Banging or abrupt changes can involve adaptations, solenoids, pressure regulation, clutch wear or internal mechanical damage.
A transmission warning or restricted gears should be scanned with Audi-compatible diagnostics before parts are replaced.
Engine speed rising without matching acceleration can indicate clutch slip or hydraulic pressure loss and should be investigated quickly.
Noise can come from the gearbox, but flywheel, mounts, differential, quattro and driveshaft components can sometimes feel transmission-related.
Describe whether the Q5 shudders under light throttle, judders from a standstill or clunks when the driveline loads and unloads.
| What you notice | How drivers describe it | Possible areas to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Judder pulling away | “It shakes as I move off or reverse.” | Clutch pack, adaptation, mechatronic control, flywheel or mounts |
| Delay then thump | “I select Drive and it pauses before engaging.” | Hydraulic pressure, clutch application, valve body/mechatronic or seals |
| RPM flare | “The revs rise before the next gear catches.” | Clutch slip, pressure loss, valve-body/mechatronic control or internal wear |
| Harsh downshift | “It bangs as I slow down.” | Adaptation, clutch/solenoid control, mounts or internal wear |
| Whine or hum | “The noise changes with road speed.” | Gearbox bearings, differential, driveshaft or wheel bearing |
| Warning / limited gears | “The gearbox warning appears and it stops shifting normally.” | Stored TCM DTC, pressure/control fault, clutch data or protection mode |
Q5 codes depend on S tronic versus Tiptronic. Ratio and pressure faults are interpreted differently from converter-lock-up faults.
| Fault code | What it broadly relates to | What may need checking |
|---|---|---|
| P0700 | Transmission control system warning request | Read the gearbox control module for the underlying transmission-specific DTCs |
| P0730 | Incorrect gear ratio | Commanded versus actual ratio, clutch application, hydraulic pressure and internal wear |
| P0841 | Transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch range or performance | Pressure signal, mechatronic/valve-body control and hydraulic integrity |
| P2711 | Unexpected / implausible mechanical gear disengagement on applicable dual-clutch systems | Clutch engagement, selector/mechatronic control and internal transmission condition |
| P0741 | Torque-converter clutch performance on applicable Tiptronic automatics | Converter lock-up, valve body, hydraulic pressure and fluid condition |
P0741-style converter faults apply to Tiptronic-type automatics, while S tronic requires clutch/mechatronic diagnosis. Identify the gearbox first.
Q5 repair cost depends on whether the vehicle uses S tronic, Tiptronic, TFSI e or a high-output SQ5 transmission.
| Audi Q5 gearbox work | Typical guide range | What can change the price? |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic scan and road test | From £30 | Gearbox and quattro complexity |
| S tronic clutch / mechatronic repair | Approx. £900 - £1,700 | Clutch, flywheel and mechatronic condition |
| Tiptronic valve-body / converter repair | Approx. £900 - £1,800 | Valve body, converter and hydraulic fault |
| Full Q5 gearbox reconditioning | Approx. £2.5k - £4.5k+ | Internal damage and transmission type |
| SQ5 / electrified transmission work | Diagnosis required | High-output or hybrid specification |
We identify Q5 generation, engine, SQ5/TFSI e status and exact transmission.
Audi-compatible diagnostics read TCM, clutch/converter, pressure and powertrain data.
S tronic clutch/mechatronic or Tiptronic valve-body/converter operation is checked with the quattro driveline.
We recommend the repair indicated by the diagnosis and confirm the price before work begins.
Tell us the Q5 year, engine and whether it is TFSI e or SQ5 if relevant, plus when the symptom appears.
Service4Service Midlands provides Audi Q5 gearbox diagnosis and repair for drivers across Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Solihull, Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Northampton and surrounding East and West Midlands areas.
Whether your Q5 shudders on the M6 near Birmingham or judders in Coventry traffic, gearbox and quattro diagnosis should be separated properly.

On S tronic models the clutch/mechatronic can be involved; Tiptronic versions can have converter lock-up issues. quattro driveline vibration should also be ruled out.
Many Q5 models use seven-speed S tronic, while selected higher-torque/performance versions use Tiptronic. Exact specification depends on engine and generation.
Audi's current Q5 generation uses modern S tronic dual-clutch technology integrated with its new combustion/MHEV platform.
Many S tronic mechatronic failures can be repaired or reconditioned once the fault is confirmed.
Targeted clutch, mechatronic, converter or valve-body repair can be cheaper than a full rebuild. Exact price depends on the unit.
Yes. AWD/driveline components can cause shudder, clunks or vibration that feel transmission-related.
S tronic or Tiptronic — identify the exact Q5 transmission and separate gearbox faults from quattro driveline symptoms.
